ఈ ఆపరేషన్ లో సుమారు 5,000 మంది పైగా పౌరులు మరణించారు,[22][23] స్వతంత్ర పరిశీలనల ప్రకారం రెండు నెలల వ్యవధిలో 18 నుంచి 20 వేల మంది సిక్కు పౌరులు గాయపడ్డారు;[24] భారత ప్రభుత్వం మాత్రం 554 పౌరులు మాత్రమే గాయపడ్డారని తెలియజేసింది.[15][25]

ఆపరేషన్ బ్లూ స్టార్ 1984 జూన్ 1 నుంచి 10 లోపల జరిగిన భారతీయ సైనిక చర్య. ఇది పంజాబ్ లోని అమృత్‌సర్ లోగల హర్‌మందిర్ సాహిబ్ (స్వర్ణదేవాలయం) కాంప్లెక్స్ నుంచి సిఖ్ దాందానీ తక్సల్ నాయకుడైన జర్నైల్ సింగ్ భింద్రాన్ వాలే, అతని అనుచరులను బయటకు రప్పించడానికి చేసిన చర్య. అప్పటి భారత ప్రధాని అయిన ఇందిరా గాంధీ ఈ చర్యకు ఆదేశించింది.[26] మాజీ జనరల్ ఎస్. కె. సిన్హా ప్రకారం ఇందిరా గాంధీ ఈ సంఘటనకు సుమారు 18 నెలల ముందు, అంటే తిరుగుబాటు దారులు ఆలయంలోని ప్రవేశించక ముందునుంచే సైన్యాన్ని ఆపరేషన్ కు సిద్ధం కమ్మని ఆదేశించింది.[27] 1982 జూలైలో పంజాబ్ కు చెందిన అకాళీదళ్ పార్టీ అధినేత హరిచంద్ సింగ్ లోంగోవాల్, జర్నైల్ సింగ్ భింద్రాన్‌వాలేను అరెస్టు నుంచి తప్పించుకునేందుకు గాను ఆలయం లోపల ఉండవల్సిందిగా ఆహ్వానించాడు.[28][29]

భారత నిఘా సంస్థలు ఈ ఆపరేషన్‌లో పాల్గొన్న ముగ్గురు ప్రముఖులు, భారతదేశం కోసం ప్రధాన యుద్ధాలలో పోరాడిన కోర్ట్-మార్షల్ ఇండియన్ ఆర్మీ ఆఫీసర్ షబేగ్ సింగ్, బల్బీర్ సింగ్, అమ్రిక్ సింగ్ లను "ఖలిస్తాన్ ఉద్యమం యొక్క ప్రముఖ నాయకులు"గా నివేదికలలో ప్రస్తావించాయి. వీరు 1981, 1983 మధ్య పాకిస్తాన్కి కనీసం ఆరు పర్యటనలు చేశారు. షబేగ్ సింగ్ అకల్ తఖ్త్ సాహిబ్లో ఆయుధ శిక్షణను అందించాడు. భారత ఇంటెలిజెన్స్ బ్యూరో జమ్మూ కాశ్మీర్, హిమాచల్ ప్రదేశ్లోని గురుద్వారాలలో వీరి బలగాలకు శిక్షణ అందిస్తున్నట్లు ఆరోపించింది. ఈ ఆరోపణలపై అమ్రిక్ సింగ్ స్పందిస్తూ, ఈ ప్రాంతాలలో గత నాలుగు దశాబ్దాలుగా విద్యార్థులకు సాంప్రదాయ ఆయుధాల శిక్షణా శిబిరాలు జరుగుతూ ఉన్నాయని పేర్కొన్నాడు.[30] అమెరికన్ గూఢచర్య సంస్థ CIA, పాకిస్థాన్ కు చెందిన ISI కలిసి పంజాబ్ కోసం ఒక ప్రణాళికపై పనిచేస్తున్నట్లు సోవియట్ గూఢచార సంస్థ కెజిబి భారత గూఢచార సంస్థ రీసెర్చ్ అండ్ అనాలిసిస్ వింగ్ (రా) కి సమాచారం అందించింది. రా అధికారులు ఒక పాకిస్తానీ ఆర్మీ అధికారిని విచారించినప్పుడు పాకిస్తాన్ ఆర్మీకి చెందిన వెయ్యి మందికి పైగా శిక్షణ పొందిన స్పెషల్ సర్వీస్ గ్రూప్ కమాండోలను భింద్రన్‌వాలే భారత ప్రభుత్వానికి వ్యతిరేకంగా చేసే పోరాటంలో సహాయం చేయడానికి పాకిస్తాన్ పంజాబ్‌లోకి పంపినట్లు సమాచారం అందింది. కానీ సరిహద్దులో ఉండే ఉన్నత స్థాయి భద్రత కారణంగా కేవలం సాధారణ సిక్కులు మాత్రమే భింద్రన్‌వాలే పక్షంలో చేరగలిగారు. అనేక మంది పాకిస్తానీ ఏజెంట్లు విధ్వంసానికి పాల్పడే ప్రణాళికలతో కాశ్మీర్, కచ్ ప్రాంతంలోని గుజరాత్ స్మగ్లింగ్ మార్గాల గుండా వచ్చారు.

1981లో సోవియట్‌ యూనియన్, ఒక స్వతంత్ర దేశాన్ని సృష్టించాలనుకునే సిక్కు తీవ్రవాదులకు ISI అందించిన ఆయుధాలు, డబ్బు వివరాలను కలిగి ఉన్న నకిలీ పత్రం ఆధారంగా ఆపరేషన్ కాంటాక్ట్‌ను ప్రారంభించింది.[1] 1982 నవంబరు లో, కమ్యూనిస్ట్ పార్టీ జనరల్ సెక్రటరీ, సోవియట్ యూనియన్ నాయకుడు యూరి ఆండ్రోపోవ్, పంజాబ్‌లో మతపరమైన అలజడులను ప్రేరేపించడానికి, ఖలిస్తాన్‌ను స్వతంత్ర సిక్కు రాజ్యంగా రూపొందించడానికి ISI ప్రణాళికలను వివరించే నకిలీ పాకిస్తానీ గూఢచార పత్రాలను రూపొందించే ప్రతిపాదనను ఆమోదించారు.[31] సోవియట్‌లు అందించిన సమాచారాన్ని సీరియస్‌గా తీసుకున్న ఇందిరా గాంధీ సిక్కులకు CIA రహస్యంగా మద్దతు ఇస్తున్నారని భావించి పంజాబ్‌లోకి సైన్యాన్ని తరలించాలనే నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంది.[32]

1984 జూన్ 1న, తీవ్రవాదులతో చర్చలు విఫలమైన తర్వాత, ఇందిరా గాంధీ ఆనంద్‌పూర్ తీర్మానాన్ని తిరస్కరించి ఆపరేషన్ బ్లూ స్టార్‌ను ప్రారంభించాలని సైన్యాన్ని ఆదేశించింది. పంజాబ్ అంతటా ఉన్న అనేక సిక్కు దేవాలయాలపై ఏకకాలంలో దాడులు మొదలయ్యాయి.[33] మిలిటెంట్ల సామర్థ్యం గురించి తెలుసుకోవడానికి జరిపిన తొలి కాల్పులలో 8 మంది సాధారణ ప్రజలు మరణించారు.[13][34] 1984 జూన్ 3 తేదికి వివిధ సైన్యాల విభాగాలు, పారామిలిటరీ దళాలు స్వర్ణదేవాలయాన్ని చుట్టుముట్టాయి. ఆపరేషన్ జరపడం కోసం సాధారణ యాత్రీకులను బయటకు రమ్మని సైన్యాధికారులు హెచ్చరికలు జారీ చేసినట్లు, జూన్ 5 వ తేదీ రాత్రి 7 గంటల వరకు ఎవరూ బయటికి రానట్లు అధికారిక వర్గాలు ధ్రువీకరించాయి. కానీ 2017లో అమృత్‌సర్ జిల్లా సెషన్స్ కోర్టు న్యాయమూర్తి గుల్బీర్ సింగ్ ఇచ్చిన తీర్పులో ఆర్మీ అధికారులు అలాంటి హెచ్చరికను జారీ చేయలేదని పేర్కొన్నాడు.[35] జూన్ 8 కల్లా ఆలయంపై సైనిక చర్య పూర్తయింది. తర్వాత పంజాబ్ మొత్తం విప్లవకారుల ఏరివేతకు ఆపరేషన్ వుడ్‌రోజ్ అమలు చేశారు.[8]

సైన్యం మిలిటెంట్ల దగ్గరున్న ఆయుధాలను తక్కువ అంచనా వేసింది. వారి దగ్గర చైనాలో తయారైన, సైనికుల కవచాలను కూడా ఛేదించగల రాకెట్ ప్రొపెల్డ్ గ్రెనేడ్ లాంచర్లు కూడా ఉన్నాయి. సైన్యం యుద్ధ ట్యాంకులు, భారీ ఫిరంగిలు తీవ్రవాదులపై దాడి చేయడానికి ఉపయోగించారు. దానికి ప్రతిగా వారు బలీయమైన కట్టడమైన అకల్ తఖ్త్ నుండి ట్యాంక్ వ్యతిరేక మెషిన్-గన్ కాల్పులతో ప్రతిస్పందించారు. 24 గంటల పోరాటం తర్వాత సైన్యం ఆలయాన్ని తమ అదుపులోకి తీసుకున్నారు. అధికారిక గణాంకాల ప్రకారం 83 మంది సైనికులు మరణించగా, 249 మంది గాయపడ్డారు. ప్రభుత్వం విడుదల చేసిన శ్వేతపత్రం ప్రకారం 1592 మంది మిలిటెంట్లు పట్టుబడ్డారు. మిలిటెంట్లు, సాధారణ పౌరులు కలిపి 554 మంది మరణించారు.[15] ఈ సంఖ్య స్వతంత్ర పరిశీలకులు[25] పేర్కొన్న 18,000 నుంచి 20,000 సంఖ్య కన్నా చాలా తక్కువ.[24] ప్రభుత్వ నివేదిక ప్రకారం ఎక్కువమంది సాధారణ పౌరులు మరణించడానికి కారణం మిలిటెంట్లు ఆలయంలో చిక్కుకుపోయిన వారిని తమకు రక్షణగా ఉపయోగించుకోవడం.[36]

యునైటెడ్ కింగ్‌డమ్ లోని మార్గరెట్ థాచర్ ప్రభుత్వం ఈ దాడికి భారత ప్రభుత్వం ప్రణాళిక రచిస్తున్నదని తెలుసుకుని ప్రత్యేక ఎయిర్ సర్వీసు అధికారిని సహాయం కోసం పంపింది.[2]
