ఓడ
ఓడ (ఆంగ్లం : ship), నీటిపై తేలియాడు ఓ ప్రయాణ సాధనం. వీటికి పరిమాణాన్ని బట్టీ, ఆకారాన్ని బట్టీ, వాడుకని బట్టీ ఇంగ్లీషులో రకరకాల పేర్లు ఉన్నాయి. అంతే కాని వీటికి నిర్దిష్టమయిన వర్గీకరణ అంటూ ఏదీ లేదు. ఉదాహరణకు, సరస్సులు, సముద్రాలు వంటి బహు పెద్ద జలాశయాల మీద ప్రయాణం చేసే యానకాలని 'ఓడలు' అనిన్నీ, నదులు, కాలువలు, చెరువులు మొదలైన చిన్న నీటి వనరుల మీద తిరుగాడే వాటిని పడవలు (boat) అనిన్నీ అనటం ఇంగ్లీషు సంప్రదాయంలో ఉంది. అయినా సరే 'పడవ' అనే మాటని చిన్న తెరచాప పడవకీ వాడుతారు, పెద్ద పెద్ద యుద్ధ నౌకలకీ వాడుతారు. సంస్కృతంలో 'నావ', ఇంగ్లీషులో 'నేవీ' (navy) జ్ఞాతి పదాలు కనుక యుద్ధ విన్యాసాలలో వాడే పెద్ద పెద్ద పడవలని నౌకలు అంటే బాగుంటుందేమో.

10,000 సంవత్సరాలకు పూర్వమే, మానవునికి ఓడలను తయారు చేసి ఉపయోగించడం తెలుసు. వాటిని, వేట కొరకు, మరీ ముఖ్యంగా చేపల వేటకు ఉపయోగించేవాడు. ప్రయాణ సాధనంగానూ ఉపయోగించేవాడు.
