కార్బన్‌ (carbon) తెలుగు పేరు కర్బనం. లాటిన్‌ భాషలో కార్బో అంటే బొగ్గు, రాక్షసి బొగ్గు అనే అర్ధాలు ఉన్నాయి. మనం కుంపట్లో వాడే బొగ్గులోనూ, రాక్షసి బొగ్గులోనూ విస్తారంగా ఉండే మూలకం కర్బనం.

ఈ రసాయన మూలకాన్ని పెద్ద బడిలోని ఇంగ్లీషు అక్షరం C తో సూచిస్తారు. దీని అణుసంఖ్య 6. ఇది ఆవర్తన పట్టిక లోని 14వ గుంపు (group) లో ఉన్న అలోహం. దీని బాహుబలం (వేలన్సీ) 4. ఈ మూలకానికి ఉన్న అనేక రూపాంతరాల్లో (allotropic forms) ముఖ్యమైనవి: గ్రేఫైట్, వజ్రం, అమూర్త కర్బనం (amorphous carbon), ఫుల్లరీన్‌ (Fullerine). ఈ మూలకం ప్రకృతిలో మూడు సమజన్యు (isotope) రూపాల్లో దొరుకుతుంది. వీటిలో కర్బనం-12 (12C అని రాస్తారు), కర్బనం-13 (13C) స్థిరత్వం ఉన్నాయి. కర్బనం-14 (14C) రేడియో ధార్మిక ఐసోటోపు. దీని అర్ధాయుష్షు 5700 సంవత్సరాలు.

ఈ విశ్వంలో విస్తారంగా లభ్యమయే మూలకాలలో (ఉదజని, రవిజని (హీలియం), ఆమ్లజని (ఆక్సీజన్) తరువాత) కర్బనం నాలుగవ స్థానంలో ఉంది. “ప్రాణానికి కార్బన్‌ కన్నా అవసరమైన మూలక౦ [element] ఏదీలేదు,” అని Nature’s Building Blocks అనే పుస్తక౦ చెప్తు౦ది.[16] మనకి తెలుసున్న జీవులన్నీటిలోనూ కర్బనం తప్పనిసరిగా ఉంటూ ఉంది. మానవ శరీరంలో, గురుత్వంలో, కర్బనానిది - ఆమ్లజని తరువాత - రెండవ స్థానం. మన శరీరాలలోని పదార్ధంలో 18.5 శాతం కర్బనమే.

కర్బనానికి బాహుబలం 4 అవటం వల్ల ఒక కర్బనపు అణువు నాలుగు దిశలలో ఇతర అణువులని సంతరించుకొని విస్తరించటానికి సదుపాయం కలిగి ఉంది. ఈ సదుపాయం వల్ల కర్బనం పెద్ద పెద్ద బణువులని అల్లుకు పోగలదు. ఈ స్తోమత ఉండటం వల్లనే జీవి శరీరంలో (కనీసం ఈ భూ గ్రహం మీద) పెద్ద పెద్ద బణువులన్నీ కర్బనం మీద ఆధారపడ్డ బణువులే (molecules). ఈ రకం స్తోమత సిద్ధాంత పరంగా సిలికాన్‌ అనే మూలకానికి కూడా ఉంది కానీ, ఈ భూలోకంలో జీవి కేవలం కర్బనపు సంతతే. అందుకనే ఆంగిక రసాయనానికి అంత ఎక్కువ ప్రాముఖ్యత.

కర్బనం యొక్క భౌతిక లక్షణాలు దాని రూపాంతరాలలోని రూపం మీద విశేషంగా ఆధారపడి ఉంటాయి. ఉదాహరణకి వజ్రం బాగా పారదర్శకంగా ఉండం వల్ల దాని మీద పడ్డ కాంతి కిరణాలు నలుదిశలకీ వెదజల్లబడి మిలమిల మెరుస్తుంది. కాని గ్రేఫైట్కి ఆ లక్షణం లేకపోవటం వల్ల గ్రాఫైట్‌ మీద పడ్డ కాంతి పరావర్తనం చెందదు. అందువల్ల గ్రాఫైట్‌ నల్లగా కనిపిస్తుంది. కాఠిన్యత గరిష్ఠంగా ఉన్న వస్తువులలో వజ్రం ఒకటి. కాఠిన్యత కనిష్ఠంగా ఉన్న వస్తువులలో గ్రాఫైట్‌ ఒకటి. విద్యుత్తు వజ్రం గుండా సులభంగా ప్రవహించదు, కాని గ్రాఫైట్‌ గుండా అతి సునాయాసంగా ప్రవహిస్తుంది. ఫుల్లరీన్‌ ఉనికి 1985 లో కనుక్కున్నారు. అలాగే అమూర్త కర్బనానికి కొద్దిపాటి మూర్తిత్వం ఉందని కూడా కనుక్కున్నారు.
