పంజాబీ /pʌnˈɑːbi/[5] (షాముఖీ: پنجابی [paṉjābī] Error: {{Transliteration}}: unrecognized language / script code: Punjabi (help); గురుముఖీ: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ pañjābī)[6] ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా 10 కోట్ల మందికి పైగా మాతృభాషగా కలిగి ప్రపంచంలోకెల్లా అతిఎక్కుమంది మాట్లాడే భాషల్లో పదో స్థానంలో (2015 నాటికి) ఉన్న భాష.[7][8]. పాకిస్తాన్ తూర్పు ప్రాంతం, భారత దేశపు ఈశాన్య ప్రాంతాల్లో విస్తరించివున్న చారిత్రికమైన పంజాబ్ ప్రాంతంలోని పంజాబీలకు ఇది మాతృభాష. కంఠస్వరం, ఉచ్చారణ మారితే పదం అర్థం మారేలాంటి టోనల్ భాష పంజాబీ. మొత్తం ఇండో-యూరోపియన్ భాషలన్నిటిలోనూ పంజాబీనే పూర్తిస్థాయి టోనల్ భాష.[9][10][11][12]

పంజాబీ పాకిస్తాన్ లో అత్యంత విస్తారంగా మాట్లాడే భాష,[13] భారతదేశంలో అత్యధికులు మాట్లాడే భాషల స్థానాల్లో పదకొండవది,[14] భారత ఉపఖండంలో అత్యధికులు మాట్లాడే భాషల్లో మూడవ స్థానంలో ఉంది. అతి ఎక్కువ మంది మాట్లాడే భాషల్లో యునైటెడ్ కింగ్‌డమ్ లో 4 స్థానంలో[15] అత్యధికులకు మాతృభాషగా కలిగిన భాషల్లో కెనడాలో మూడవ స్థానంలో (ఆంగ్లం, ఫ్రెంచి తర్వాత).[16][17] యునైటెడ్ అరబ్ ఎమిరేట్స్, అమెరికా, సౌదీ అరేబియా, ఆస్ట్రేలియా దేశాల్లోనూ చెప్పుకోదగ్గ స్థాయిలో ఉంది. బాలీవుడ్ సినిమాల్లో పలు గీతాలు పాక్షికంగానూ, పూర్తిగానూ పంజాబీలోనే పాడివుండడం భారత ఉపఖండ వ్యాప్తంగా పంజాబీకి సాంస్కృతిక లింకులా అమరింది.[18][19][20]
