Varavikrayam 1939-Message Movie
PLOT DESCRIPTION Telugu filmmaker C. Pullaiah directs this socially minded film about the evils of the dowry system set in Calcutta. Though personally against the dowry system, retired civil servant Purshottama Rao borrows a stack of money to pay for his eldest daughter Kalindi's (P. Bhanumathi) dowry to old, tight-fisted Lingaraju -- who has been married three times before. Kalindi is so opposed to the marriage that she commits suicide. When Rao asks for the dowry back, Lingaraju refuses. Instead, Rao's second daughter agrees to marry the old man, but then soon after the wedding, takes her husband to court to return the money. Varavikrayam was the debut film for Telugu icon Bhanumathi. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
