కేరళలో 17వ శతాబ్దానికి చెందిన పూతన చెక్క శిల్పం

పూతన హిందూ పురాణాల్లో ఒక రాక్షసి. ఈమె వృత్తాంతం ప్రధానంగా భాగవత పురాణంలో కనిపిస్తుంది. ఈమె యవ్వనవతి రూపంలో వచ్చి పసికందు శ్రీకృష్ణుడిని విషంతో కూడిన పాలను ఇచ్చి చంపబోగా ఆమె పాలతో సహా, ప్రాణాలను కూడా లాగి ఆమెను సంహరించాడు. ఆమె ఉద్దేశ్యం చెడుదే అయినప్పటికీ పాలిచ్చి మాతృప్రేమను చూపింది కాబట్టి ఆమె శ్రీకృష్ణునికి పెంపుడు తల్లివంటిది. వేర్వేరు హిందూ పురాణాల్లో ఈమెను ఒక చెడ్డ రాక్షసిగా చిత్రీకరించారు కానీ చివర్లో ఆమె శ్రీకృష్ణునికి ప్రాణాలు సమర్పించుకుంది.
