ప్రారంభ జీవితం - విద్య

సీతాకాంత్ మహాపాత్ర ఒడిషాలోని మహానది యొక్క ఉపనది "చిత్రోత్పల" యొక్క ఒడ్డున గల మహంగ గ్రామంలో 1937 లో జన్మించారు.[7] ఆయన సాంప్రదాయ కుటుంబంలో ఒరియా భాషలో గల భగవద్గీత లోని అధ్యాయాన్ని వల్లె వేస్తూ పెరిగాడు. ఆయన కొరువా ప్రభుత్వ పాఠశాలలో విద్యనభ్యసించిన తదుపరి కటక్ లోని "రేవెన్‌షా కాలేజి" (అప్పటికి ఉత్కల్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయ అనుబంధ కాలేజి) ని ఎంచుకున్నారు. అచట 1957 లో బి.ఎ హిస్టరీ ఆనర్స్ ను పూర్తి చేసారు. ఆ తరువాత 1959 లో అలహావాదు విశ్వవిద్యాలయం నుండి రాజనీతి శాస్త్రంలో ఎం.ఎ డిగ్రీని పూర్తిచేసారు. ఆ కాలంలో ఆయన విశ్వవిద్యాలయ జర్నల్ సంపాదకునిగా యున్నారు. అచట ఆయన ఆంగ్లము మరియు ఒరియా భాషలలో రచనలను ప్రారంభించారు. కానీ తరువాత ఆయన తన స్థానిక భాషలోనే కవిత్వం వ్రాయాలని నిర్ణయించుకున్నాడు. " ఒక కవి తను కలలు కన్న భావాలను వ్యక్తీకరించడానికి స్వంత భాష అవసరం" అని ఆయన అభిప్రాయం. ఆయన పాండిత్య రచనలన్నీ ఆంగ్లంలో ఉన్నాయి.[5][8]

1969 లో కేంబ్రిడ్జ్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయం నుండి ఆయన డిప్ ఓవర్సీస్ డెవలప్ మెంటు అద్యయనం" చేసారు.[5][9]

అదేవిధంగా 1988 లో హార్వర్డ్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలోని ఆహర ఫౌండేషన్ ఫెలోషిప్ కార్యక్రంలో భాగంగా ఒక సంవత్సరం పాటు గడిపాడు.

He is the recipient of many awards including the Orissa Sahitya Academy Award, 1971 and 1984; the Sahitya Akademi Award, 1974; Sarala Award, 1985; culminating in India's highest literary honour the Jnanpith Award in 1993. In 2002, he was honoured by the Government of India with a Padma Bhushan. In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India.
