The recorded onset of medical education in Visakhapatnam can be traced back to the last millennium in the year 1902, when the [[Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medical School]] was set up in the Old Post Office area supported by Maharaja Goday Narayana Gajapati Rao and Maharani Lady Goday Chittijanakiammah. |

ఆంధ్ర వైద్య కళాశాల కేంద్ర గ్రంథాలయము 1930 లో స్థాపించబడినది. 1987 సంవత్సరానికి ఇక్కడ సుమారు 32,000 పుస్తకాలు మరియు 107 పత్రికలు సేకరించబడినవి. ఈ మధ్యకాలంలో గ్రంథాలయం పానగల్ భవంతి దగ్గరలోని నూతన భవంతిలోకి తరళించబడినది.

కింగ్ జార్జి ఆసుపత్రి గౌరవనీయులైన పానగల్ రాజా, మద్రాసు ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా ఉన్నప్పుడు 19 జూలై, 1923 లో ప్రారంభించారు. అప్పటి 192 పడకల సామర్ధ్యాన్ని 1931-32 కల్లా 270 కి పెంచారు. స్త్రీల మరియు గర్భిణీ స్త్రీల విభాగం 1928లో 40 పడకలతో నిర్మించబడినది. నేత్ర చికిత్సా విభాగం 1932లో 80 పడకలతో నిర్మించారు. ఓ.పి.విభాగము మరియు అత్యవసర సర్వీసుల కోసం ప్రత్యేక భవనం 1940లో నిర్మించారు. దానికి దగ్గరలోనే 36 పడకలతో చిన్న పిల్లల విభాగం 1943 లో నిర్మించి తరువాత కాలంలో దానిని స్త్రీల విభాగంతో విలీనం చేశారు. పరిపాలనా విభాగం మరియు జంట శస్త్రచికిత్స థియేటర్లు 1951లో నిర్మించారు.
ఆసుపత్రిని విస్తృత పరచి స్వాతంత్ర్యానంతరం మద్రాసు గవర్నరు పేరు మీద భావనగర్ వార్డు 1949లో నిర్మించారు. భారత రాష్ట్రపతి రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ 1955లో రాజేంద్ర ప్రసాద్ వార్డు 1955లోను తరువాత ఆరోగ్య శాఖామాత్యులైన రాజకుమారి అమ్రిత్ కౌర్ 1956లో పిల్లల వార్డు ప్రారంభించారు. గుండె చికిత్స కోసం ఇన్టెన్సివ్ కేర్ యూనిట్ 1986 లో తరువాత హృద్రోగ శస్త్రచికిత్స విభాగం చేర్చబడినవి. ప్రయోగశాలల కోసం ప్రత్యేక విభాగం 1992లో నిర్మించారు. ఆంధ్ర ప్రదేశ్ లోనే మొట్టమొదటిగా న్యూక్లియర్ వైద్యచికిత్స విభాగం 8 అక్టోబర్, 1993 లో ప్రారంభించారు.
ప్రభుత్వ విక్టోరియా ఆసుపత్రి మహారాజా శ్రీ జి.ఎన్.గణపతిరావు గారు 1894 లో దానమివ్వగా, 1949లో మద్రాసు ప్రభుత్వం స్వీకరించి నడుపుతున్నది. ఈ ఆసుపత్రిలో మూడు విభాగాలతో 147 పడకలు కలిగిఉన్నది.
