భారతదేశంలో ఒకపెద్ద రాజకీయ పార్టీగా అవతరించిన భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ సంస్థకు (ఐ.ఎన్.సి) అత్యున్నత ఆధిపత్యం వహించే వ్యక్తిని భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ అధ్యక్షుడు అని వ్యవహరిస్తారు. రాజ్యాంగపరంగా, ప్రదేశ్ కాంగ్రెస్ కమిటీలు, అఖిల భారత కాంగ్రెస్ కమిటీ (ఎఐసిసి) సభ్యులతో కూడిన ఎలక్టోరల్ కాలేజీ ద్వారా అధ్యక్షుడినిఎన్నుకుంటారు.[2] పైన పేర్కొన్న అధ్యక్షుడి మరణం లేదా రాజీనామా వంటి ఏదైనా కారణంవల్ల అత్యవసరం సంభవించినట్లయితే, కార్యనిర్వాహక సంఘం ఒక తాత్కాలిక అధ్యక్షుడిని నియమించే వరకు అత్యంత సీనియర్ జనరల్ సెక్రటరీ అధ్యక్షుడి ఎఐసిసి ద్వారా సాధారణ విధులను నిర్వహిస్తాడు.[2] పార్టీ అధ్యక్షుడు పార్టీ జాతీయ నాయకుడు, పార్టీ సంస్థ అధిపతి, వర్కింగ్ కమిటీ అధిపతి, ప్రధాన ప్రతినిధి అన్ని ప్రధాన కాంగ్రెస్ కమిటీలు సమర్థవంతంగా నిర్వహించటానికి ఆదేశాలు ఇచ్చేవ్యక్తిగా హాదాలు, అధికారాలు కలిగిఉంటాడు.[3]

1885 డిసెంబరులో పార్టీ స్థాపించిన తరువాత, వోమేష్ చుందర్ బోన్నర్జీ దాని మొదటి అధ్యక్షుడుగా పనిచేసాడు.1885 నుండి1933 వరకు అధ్యక్ష పదవీకాలం ఒక సంవత్సరం మాత్రమే ఉండేది.1933 నుండి అధ్యక్షుడికి అలాంటి స్థిరపదం లేదు.[4] జవహర్‌లాల్ నెహ్రూ ప్రధానమంత్రిగా ఉన్నప్పుడు, అతను ఎల్లప్పుడూ శాసనసభా పక్షానికి అధిపతిగా ఉన్నప్పటికీ, అరుదుగా ఐ.ఎన్.సి. అధ్యక్ష బాధ్యతలు నిర్వహించేవాడు. సంస్థాగత నిర్మాణంతో కూడిన పార్టీ అయినప్పటికీ, ఇందిరాగాంధీ నాయకత్వంలోని కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీ 1978 తర్వాత ఎలాంటి సంస్థాగత ఎన్నికలను నిర్వహించలేదు.[5] 1978లో, ఇందిరాగాంధీ ఐ.ఎన్.సి నుండి విడిపోయింది.కొత్త ప్రతిపక్ష పార్టీని స్థాపించింది. దీనిని కాంగ్రెస్ (ఐ) అని వ్యవహరిస్తారు.1984 సాధారణ ఎన్నికలకు ముందు దీనిని జాతీయ ఎన్నికల సంఘం అసలైన భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్‌గా ప్రకటించింది.[6][7][8] కాంగ్రెస్ (ఐ) ఏర్పడిన తర్వాత కాంగ్రెస్ అధ్యక్షుడు, భారతదేశం ప్రధానమంత్రిగా ఒకే వ్యక్తిని కలిగి ఉండే పద్ధతిని ఇందిరాగాంధీ సంస్థాగతీకరించింది..[9] ఆమె రాజకీయవారసులు రాజీవ్ గాంధీ పివి నరసింహారావు అదే పద్ధతిని కొనసాగించారు.ఏదేమైనా 2004లో, కాంగ్రెస్ తిరిగి అధికారంలోకి వచ్చినప్పుడు, రెండు పదవులను కలిగి ఉండే సంప్రదాయం ఉన్నప్పటికీ, మన్మోహన్ సింగ్ పార్టీ అధ్యక్షుడిగా ఉండని మొదటి ప్రధాని అయ్యాడు.[10]

భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ ఏర్పడినప్పటి నుండి 2021 నాటికి మొత్తం 61 మంది అధ్యక్షులుగా పనిచేశారు. [11] సోనియా గాంధీ 1998 నుండి 2017 వరకు ఇరవై సంవత్సరాలపాటు ఆపదవిలో కొనసాగి పార్టీలో సుదీర్ఘకాలం పనిచేసిన అధ్యక్షురాలిగా గణతికెక్కింది. 2019 నుండి తిరిగి అధ్యక్షురాలిగా కొనసాగుతుంది.[11]
