బిషప్ రాబర్ట్ కాల్డ్వెల్ (1814 - 1891) ప్రఖ్యాత భాషా శాస్త్రజ్ఞుడు. ద్రవిడభాషలను (తెలుగు, తమిళము, కన్నడము, మళయాళము) అధ్యయనము చేసిన మొదటి ఐరోపా వ్యక్తి. 1856 లో ఆయన Comparative Grammar of Dravidian Languages అన్న గ్రంథము ప్రచురించాడు. ఈ భాషలు సంస్కృతము కంటే పురాతనమైనవనీ, వేరైనవనీ ఆయన ప్రతిపాదించాడు.

తొలి జీవితం[మార్చు]

రాబర్ట్ కాల్డ్వెల్ మే 7, 1814 సంవత్సరంలో స్కాటిష్ కుటుంబంలో జన్మించాడు. గ్లాస్గో విశ్వవిద్యాలయం నుండి పట్టభద్రుడైన తర్వాత వివిధ భాషల మధ్య పోలికలు ఆశ్చర్యాన్ని కలుగజేసేవి. 24 సంవత్సరాల వయసున్న కాల్డ్వెల్ లండన్ మిషనరీ సొసైటీ క్రింద మద్రాసు జనవరి 8, 1838 సంవత్సరంలో చేరాడు.

కాల్డ్వెల్ 1844 లో ఎలిజా మౌల్ట్ (1822-99) ను వివాహం చేసుకున్నాడు. వీరికి ఏడుగురు పిల్లలు. ఎలిజా ప్రసిద్ధిచెందిన తిరువనంతపురం మిషనరీ రివరెండ్ చార్లెస్ మౌల్ట్ (1791-1858) కుమార్తె. ఈమె నలభై సంవత్సరాల పైగా భారతీయ మహిళల విద్య సాధికారత మీద పనిచేశారు.[1] తమిళ భాషను క్షుణ్ణంగా నేర్చుకున్న తర్వాత ఇతర ద్రవిడ భాషలను శాస్త్రీయంగా పరిశోధించడం మొదలుపెట్టాడు.

ద్రావిడ భాషల వర్గీకరణ[మార్చు]

రానర్ట్ కాల్డ్వెల్ దక్షిణ భారతీయ భాషలైన తమిళం, తెలుగు, కన్నడం, మళయాలం ఒక ప్రత్యేకమైన భాషా కుంటుంబానికి చెందినవని ప్రతిపాదించాడు. వీటిని ద్రవిడ భాషలు అని పిలిచాడు. ఈ భాషల ప్రాచీనత, లిటరేచర్ చరిత్ర ఆధారంగా వీటిని సంస్కృతం, ఇండో-ఆర్యన్ భాషల నుండి వేరుచేయాలని భావించాడు.[2] ఈ భాషలు మాట్లాడేవారి పూర్వీకులు భారతదేశం లోకి ఉత్తర పశ్చిమ వైపు ఉండి వచ్చి ఉంటారని కూడా ప్రతిపాదించాడు. థామస్ ట్రాట్ మాన్ ఇతని పుస్తకం గురించి ఈ విధంగా వ్రాసాడు:[3]

"Caldwell showed the full extent of the Dravidian family, and demonstrated the relations among the languages in a richness of detail that has made it a classic work, still in print. The real significance of what Caldwell accomplished was not the first conception of the Dravidian family, but the consolidation of the proof."
