2016 అక్టోబర్ 9న ఎ.ఆర్.ఎస్.ఎ. తిరుగుబాటుదారులు బంగ్లాదేశ్-మయన్మార్ సరిహద్దు వెంబడి బర్మీస్ సరిహద్దు దళాల స్థావరాలపై దాడిచేయడంతో హింస ప్రారంభం అయింది. 520 సాయుధులు, 2,000 మందికి పైగా సాధారణ ప్రజలు మరణించినట్టు అంచనా.[22] 23 వేలమంది ప్రజలు అంతర్గతంగా నిర్వాసితులయ్యారు.

అక్టోబర్ 2016 దాడి తర్వాత రోహింగ్యా తిరుగుబాటుదారులుగా అనుమానితులైన సాధారణ ప్రజల మీద బర్మీస్ భద్రతా దళాలు దాడులు చేస్తున్నాయంటూ మానవ హక్కుల ఉల్లంఘనలు జరిగాయని పేర్కొంటూ పలు రిపోర్టులు వెలువడ్డాయి.[23] 2017 ఆగస్టు 25న ప్రారంభమైన తర్వాత హింస అనంతరం 2 వారాల్లో కనీసం 2,70,000 మంది రోహింగ్యాలు వలసపోయారు.[24][25]
