మదన్ మోహన్ మాలవ్యాా (1861–1946) భారతీయ విద్యావేత్త మరియు రాజకీయవేత్త. భారతీయ స్వాతంత్ర్యోద్యమంలో పాల్గొన్న సమరయోధుడు. ఆయన గౌరవంగా "పండిట్ మదన్ మోహన్ మాలవీయ" గా కూడా పిలువబడుతున్నారు.[1] ఆయన "మహాత్మా" గా కూడా గౌవరింపబడ్డాడు.[2] మాలవ్యా బెనారస్ హిందూ విశ్వవిద్యాలయం వ్యవస్థాపకుడు. ఈయన వారణాసిలో ఈ విశ్వవిద్యాలయాన్ని 1915 లో స్థాపించాడు. ఇది ఆసియాలోనే అతిపెద్ద రెసిడెన్షియల్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయం మరియు ప్రపంచంలోనే పెద్ద విశ్వవిద్యాలయం.[3] ఇందులో 12,000 లకు పైగా విద్యార్థులు కళలు,విజ్ఞానశాస్త్రము, ఇంజనీరింగ్ మరియు టెక్నాలజీ లలో విద్యనభ్యసిస్తున్నారు. మాలవ్యా ఆ విశ్వవిద్యాలయానికి వైస్ ఛాన్సలర్ గా 1919 నుండి 1938 వరకు పనిచేశారు.[4][5]

మాలవ్యా భారత జాతీయ కాంగ్రెస్ కు అధ్యక్షునిగా నాలుగు సార్లు (1909 & 1913,1919,1932) పనిచేశారు. ఆయన 1934లో కాంగ్రెస్ ను విడిచిపెట్టారు. ఆయన హిందూ మహాసభలో ముఖ్యమైన నాయకునిగా కూడా ఉన్నారు. మాలవ్యా "భారతీయ స్కౌట్స్ మరియు గైడ్సు" కు ఒక వ్యవస్థాపకుడు.[6] ఆయన 1909 లో అలహాబాదు నుండి వెలువడుతున్న ఆంగ్ల పత్రిక లీడర్ పత్రికను స్థాపించారు.[7] ఆయన 1924 నుండి 1946 వరకు హిందూస్థాన్ టైమ్స్ కు చైర్మన్ గా ఉన్నారు. ఆయన సేవలు 1936 లో హిందీ ఎడిషన్ ప్రారంభానికి ఉపయోగపడ్డాయి.[7]

మాలవ్యా భారతదేశంలోని ప్రతిష్టాత్మక అవార్డు అయిన భారతరత్న కు డిసెంబరు 24,2014 న ఎంపికైనారు. ఈ అవార్డును ఆయన 125 వ జన్మదినం ముందుగా పొందారు.[8]

ప్రారంభ జీవితం మరియు విద్య

మాలవ్య 1861, డిసెంబరు 25న అలహాబాదులో ఒక నిష్టులైన హిందూ కుటుంబములో జన్మించారు.[9] ఆయన తల్లిదండ్రులు మూనాదేవి మరియు బ్రిజ్ నాథ్ లు. వారి పూర్వీకులు మధ్యప్రదేశ్ లోని మాల్వా నుండి వచ్చారు. అందువలన వారు "మాలవీయ" గా పిలువబడతారు. అందువల్ల వారి యింటిపేరు "వ్యాస్"గా అయింది. మాలవ్యాలు బెనార్స్ లోని అగర్వాల్ వర్తకులకు ఇంటిపురోహితులుగా యున్నారు.[10] ఆయన తండ్రి సంస్కృత గ్రంథములను అభ్యసించేవాడు. ఆయన శ్రీమద్బాగవతమును చెప్పి ధనం సంపాదించేవాడు.[10] మాలవ్యా సంప్రదాయకంగా రెండు సంస్కృత పాఠశాలలో విద్యాభ్యాసం చేశాడు.ఆ తరువాత ఆయన ఆంగ్ల పాఠశాలలో తన విద్యాభ్యాసాన్ని కొనసాగించాడు.[11] మాలవ్యా తన విద్యాభ్యాసాన్ని హరదేవా ధర్మ జ్ఞానోపదేశ పాఠశాలలో కొనసాగించాడు. అచట ఆయన ప్రాథమిక విద్యను పూర్తిచేశాడు.ఆ తరువాత ఆయన వైద వర్థిని సభ నదుపుతున్న పాఠశాలలో చేరాడు. ఆ తరువాత అలహాబాదు జిల్లా పాఠశాలలో చేరారు. అచట ఆయన "మకరంద్" అనే కలం పేరుతో కవిత్వం వ్రాయడం ప్రారంభించాడు. ఆ కవితలు వివిధ జర్నల్స్ మరియు మ్యాగజెన్లలో ప్రచురితమైనాయి.

మాలవ్యా 1879 లో ముయిర్ సెంట్రల్ కాలేజీ నుండి మెట్రిక్యులేషన్ పూర్తి చేశారు. ఆ కళాశాల ప్రస్తుతం అలహాబాదు విశ్వవిద్యాలయంగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందినది.హారిసన్ కాలేజి ప్రిన్సిపాల్ మాలవ్యాకు నెలసరి ఉపకార వేతనాన్ని అందించేవారు. మాలవ్యా కలకత్తా విశ్వవిద్యాలయం నుండి బి.ఎ. లో పట్టభద్రులైనారు. ఆయన సంస్కృతం లో ఎం.ఎ చేయాలనుకున్నప్పటికీ ఆయన కుటుంబ పరిస్థితులు సహకరించలేదు. ఆయన తండ్రి ఆయనను కూడా తన వృత్తిలోనికి సహాయకునిగా తీసుకుని వెళ్ళేవాడు. జూలై 1884 లో మదన్ మోహన్ మాలవ్యా తన ఉద్యోగ జీవితాన్ని అలహాబాదు ఉన్నత పాఠశలలో ఉపాధ్యాయునిగా చేరి ప్రారంభించారు.[11]


బ్రిటిష్ రాజ్యంలో భారత భవిష్యత్తును నిర్థారించడానికి ఏర్పాటైన సైమన్ కమీషన్ ను వ్యతిరేకించడానికి లాలా లజపతి రాయ్, జవహర్ లాల్ నెహ్రూ ఇంకా ఇతర స్వాతంత్ర సమరయోధులతో కలిశాడు. 1931లో జరిగిన రౌండ్ టేబుల్ సమావేశంలో మహాత్మా గాంధీతో కలిసి కాంగ్రేసు పార్టీకి ప్రాతినిధ్యం వహించాడు.

వారసత్వం

Malviya popularised the slogan Satyameva Jayate (Truth alone will triumph).[12] Malviya Nagar in Allahabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Bhopal, Durg and Jaipur are named after him. A square in main city at Jabalpur is named after him and is called Malviya chowk.

The Indian postal department issued postage stamp in his honour in 1961 to celebrate his 100th birth anniversary [13] and then in 2011 to celebrate his 150th birth centenary[14]

Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) at Jaipur is named after him, as is Madan Mohan Malaviya University of Technology in Gorakhpur, UP. The Hostels of IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee Saharanpur Campus and BITS Pilani,Pilani and Hyderabad campuses are also named Malviya Bhawan after him,In memory of him, Shrigoud Vidya Mandir,Indore celebrate his birth anniversary as MAHAMANA Divas on every 25 December. They have also declared a fellowship programme for poor Sanatan Vipra boys on this day.

He started the tradition of Aarti at Har ki Pauri Haridwar to the sacred Ganga river which is performed till date, the Malviya Dwipa, a small island across the ghat, named after him. This was inline with the Ganesha Festival started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Maharashtra to organise the masses.

Mahamana's life size portrait was unveiled in the Central Hall of India's Parliament by the then President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and his life-size statue was unveiled in 1961 by the then President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in front of the BHU main gate on the occasion of his birth centenary. In front of the main Gate leading to the Assembly Hall and outside the porch, there exists a bust of Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya, which was inaugurated by the former Lt. Governor of Delhi, Dr. A.N. Jha on 25 December 1971.[15]

On 25 December 2008, on his birth anniversary, the national memorial of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya was inaugurated by the then president A P J Abdul Kalam at 53, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, in Delhi.[16]

2011 was celebrated as his 150th birth centenary by the Government of India under the Chairmanship of India's prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who announced the establishment of a Centre for Malviya Studies at the Banaras Hindu University in addition to scholarships and education related awards in his memory, and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi released a biography of Madan Mohan Malaviya.[17]

On December 24, 2014, Madan Mohan Malaviya was honored with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.[18]
