English: Nagunur (Nagunoor) is located about 10 kilometers north of Karimnagar city. Now reduced to a village-like small town, Nagunur was a major political and religious center by the 13th-century. It has the remains of many major temples as well as is littered with the ruins of numerous damaged stambhas, toranas and temples.
  • The earliest inscriptions found in this area that mention Nagunur, as Nagaruru, and its significance is from the second half of the 12th-century. It also mentions the Kakatiya king Rudradeva.
  • Another inscription found inside one of the ruined temples, but does not mention the name Nagarur or Nagunur, is from the 11th-century. It helps date the temple and establishes that the temples of Nagunur were in existence by the 11th-century.
  • The Trikutalayam temple is one of several historic triple shrines found in Nagunur. This specific temple is on the eastern edge of the village, close to SH 7 highway and northwest of the modern medical sciences center in Nagunur.
  • The badly ruined condition of the temple makes it difficult to establish the deities in the three sanctums of this temple. However, the repetition of Surya reliefs suggest that he was likely one, if not in all of them. Other deities found in broken panels include Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Indra, Ganesha, Durga and others. Artwork found show elephants, bulls, makaras, swans.
  • The temple originally had a upapitha, jagati (platform) with a square plan.
  • The temple is under restoration, with replacement parts inspired by the recovered ruins.
