హిందూ పురాణాల ప్రకారం, లూనార్ రాజ వంశీయులు క్షత్రియ జాతికి చెందిన వారు. ఈ రాజవంశాన్ని చంద్రవంశ రాజులుగా పేర్కొన్నారు.[1] మహాభారత ప్రకారం ఈ రాజవంశం పూర్వీకుడు ప్రయోగను పాలించాడు అతని కుమారుడు శశాంభిండు బహలీ దేశంలో పాలించాడు.।[2] ఇలా వారి వారసులను (చంద్రవంశం రాజులు గా పిలువబడ్డారు) పురాతన భారతదేశ రాజుల రాజవంశం. బుద్ధుని కుమారుడైన పురూరవుస్ ఈ రాజవంశ స్థాపకుడని చరిత్రకారుల కథనం.[3][4]
శతాపాత బ్రాహ్మణ ప్రకారం, బుద్ధుని (తనను తాను సోముని కుమారుడిగా అభివర్ణించేవాడు), లింగ మార్పిడి చేసే దేవత ఇలా (మను కుమార్తెగా జన్మించింది) ల కుమారుడు పురూరవుడు[5]. పురూరవుని మనవడు యాయాతి, అతనికి యదు, తుర్వాసు, ద్రుహ్యూ, అను, పురుష అనే ఐదుగురు కుమారులు ఉన్నారు. వేదాలలో వివరించిన విధంగా ఇవి ఐదు ఇండో-ఆర్యన్ తెగల పేర్లుగా కనిపిస్తున్నాయి.[6]
మహాభారతం ప్రకారం, రాజవంశ పూర్వీకుడు ఇలా ప్రయాగ నుండి పరిపాలించాడు. బహాలి దేశంలో పాలించిన అతని కుమారుడు శషాబిందుడు ఉన్నాడు.[7] ఈ వారసులను చంద్రవంశ అని కూడా పిలుస్తారు.[8]
