It is best to make it align to center and avoid applying the thumbnail option here. Alternatively this parameter actually gives you freedom to put anything other than image inside, but be sensible. |

If your route map is built up by the templates of project:route diagram template, the whole map is best to be written in a separate template and transcluded by the {{infobox rdt}}. This will prevent the map from breaking up in IE7 or older browsers. See West Coast Wilderness Railway for example. |
