నిమిషము అనేది ఒక కాలమానము. ఒక గంటలో 60 వ భాగం నిముషం[1]. ఇది 60 సెకండ్ల కాలానికి సమానము. ఇది SI ప్రమాణం కానప్పటికీ, దీనీ SI ప్రమాణంగా అంగీకరించారు.[2] దీనికి SI ప్రమాణం min (ప్రమాణం ప్రక్కన డాట్ ఉంచరాదు). నిముషం కోణానికి కూడా ఒక కొలమానం. కోణాన్ని కొలిచేటపుడు ఒక నిముషం అంటే ఒక డిగ్రీలో 60 వ వంతు. ఇది 60 ఆర్కు సెకండ్లకు సమానం.

సా.శ. 1000లో యూదు నెలలను చర్చిస్తున్నప్పుడు మొట్టమొదటి సారి ఆల్-బెరూని గంటను అరవై భాగాలుగా విభజిస్తూ నిమిషం, సెకండ్లు, దర్డ్, ఫోర్త్‌లను ప్రవేశపెట్టాడు[3]. 1235 ప్రాంతంలో జాన్ ఆఫ్ సాక్రోబోస్కో ఈ విధానాన్ని కొనసాగించాడు. కానీ సాక్రోబోస్కో అది కనుగొన్న మొదటి వ్యక్తి అని నాథాఫ్ట్ భావించాడు.[4]

చారిత్రికంగా "minute" (మినిట్) అనే పదం లాటిన్ పదమైన pars minuta prima నుండి వ్యుత్పత్తి అయినది. దాని అర్థం "మొదటి చిన్న భాగం". గంటను విభజించడం తరువాత "సెకండ్ చిన్న భాగం" (లాటిన్:pars minuta secunda)గా జరిగింది. తరువాత "సెకండు" అనే పదం వచ్చింది. తరువాత సెకండును కూడా 60 భాగాలుగా విభజించి "దర్డ్" (సెకండులో 1⁄60 వంతు) పేరు పెట్టారు. అయినప్పటికీ వాడుకలో సెకండులోని భాగాలను దశాంశాలలో సూచించడం జరుగుతున్నది.

1267 లో, మధ్యయుగ శాస్త్రవేత్త రోజర్ బేకన్, లాటిన్లో వ్రాస్తూ, రెండు పౌర్ణమి ల మధ్య సమయాన్ని అనేక గంటలు, నిమిషాలు, సెకన్లు, థర్డ్‌లు, ఫోర్త్‌లు (హోరే, మినుటా, సెకండ, టెర్టియా, క్వార్టా) లను పేర్కొన్న క్యాలెండర్ తేదీలతో నిర్వచించారు.[5]

1675 లో థామస్ టాంపియన్ అనే ఇంగ్లీష్ వాచ్ మేకర్ హెయిర్‌స్ప్రింగ్ కనిపెట్టిన తర్వాతే నిమిషం చేతి గడియారాలలో ప్రవేశపెట్టడం సాధ్యమైంది.[6]
