మురికివాడ (slum) ఐక్యరాజ్య సమితి నిర్వచనం ప్రకారం పట్టణాలలోని కనీస అవసరాలు లేని నివాస ప్రాంతాలు. అభివృద్ధి చెందుతున్న దేశాలలో మురికివాడల్లో నివసించే ప్రజల శాతం 1990 - 2005 మధ్య 47 నుండి 37 కు తగ్గింది.[1] అయినా పెరుగుతున్న జనాభా దృష్ట్యా మురికివాడల్లో నివసించే ప్రజలు ఎక్కువ అవువున్నారు. ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా బిలియన్ ప్రజలు మురికివాడల్లో నివసిస్తున్నారు.ref>Article on Mike Davis's book 'Planet of Slums</ref> and the figure will likely grow to 2 billion by 2030.[2]
