నివేదిక

The two day training workshop was called "You too can write on Wikipedia!" The workshop was organized by APTDC in collaboration with Centre for Internet and Society's Access to Knowledge Program (CIS-A2K) and National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Mangagement (NITHM). Mr. T. Vishnu Vardhan from CIS-A2K and Telugu SIG and Telugu Wikipedia Sysop Mr. Rahmanuddin Shaik led this two day Wikipedia orientation and training workshop. APTDC staff (3 members) and 13 students from NITHM participated in this workshop.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the participants to writing on Wikipedia by which the participants' writing, critical thinking and research skills were strengthened. In doing so the participants were made aware of how to use Wikipedia and provide more knowledge and information on Andhra Pradesh toursim. The participants were given a demonstration and shown various techniques of writing on Telugu, Hindi and English Wikipedia. Various aspects of Do’s & Don’ts were also discussed by the CIS-A2K Program Director T. Vishnu Vardhan. The primary focus was on Telugu Wikipedia.

Day 1 13 students from NITHM and 3 employees from APTDC participated in the workshop. Building knowledge Bases & platforms Via mass collaboration on the internet was topic and the students/participants were introduced to the basics of Wikipedia editing which was a hands on activity for all of us.All the students could edit few of the existing articles on Wikipedia ,relevant to AP as to get the experience of creating any entry or editing the existing entry on Wikipedia.

DAY 2

Advanced Wikipedia editing –a hands on activity during the first half of the day followed by the discussions on the pilot project (Cultural Tourism in AP) for the NITHM students to contribute their assignments on Wikipedia. All the13 Students from NITHM who were part of the Workshop have volunteered to be part of this pilot project. They were given an option to opt-out of this pilot and were told that they can take part in this completely on their own accord. Even the Prinicipal, who addressed the students at the end of the Two-day workshop, asked them if they are all willing to be part of the pilot and all the students collectively expressed their willingness to join this pilot. The student participants from NITHM and APTDC staff were given detailed brief about the pilot project. The details of the pilot project are as follows:

1. All the students were given an opt out option if they aren’t interested to participate in the 3 months project explaining them the need/benefit of the project taken up ,the time they may have to spend on the project, for which 13 out of 13 students have shown their eagerness to participate in the assignment for the next 3 months.
2. Topic chosen for the assignment is Cultural tourism in which Cuisnes, locations, festivals, wildlife, heritage, culture, art & craft in Andhra Pradesh are few of the topics they have chosen to work in the next 3 months.
3. FESTIVALS-The first topic given away to them along with the content to the students .Content has to have reference & citations while using Wikipedia and hence an authentic reference is required which I may require support from various officials in APTDC.
4. The best participants and top performers in the project will be given away a certificate by CIS-A2K and APTDC/NITHM may collaborate in signing the certificate which is a value added certificate for the students in their career.
5. Each student will be asked to produce 10 quality articles (of about 1500-2000 words) on various aspects of cultural tourism in Andhra Pradesh. The students were encourage to create articles in Indian languages also. CIS-A2K will offer support and training to students on writing effectively on Wikipedia. APTDC will provide information and sources on these aspects (e.g. Secondary sources, research information, data, images, etc).

Way forward

It was proposed that APTDC, NITHM and CIS-A2K enter into an MoU to execute this pilot project. CIS-A2K offered to support this pilot program for the next 3 month period. CIS-A2K will also create a project page on Wikipedia for this project title "Cultural Tourism in AP-Wikipedia Education Program". APTDC and NITHM will offer necessary infrastructure and resources to execute this program successfully. All the parties will review the progress of the pilot program and will decide on scaling this to the entire NITHM institution.
