19 వ శతాబ్దపు ఆర్థిక వేత్తలలో ప్రసిద్ధుడైన ఆల్ఫ్రెడ్ మార్షల్ 1842లో ఇంగ్లాండు లోని లండన్లో జన్మించాడు. సెయింట్ జాన్స్ కళాశాల, కేంబ్రిడ్జి విశ్వవిద్యాలయాలలో ఉన్నత విద్య అభ్యసించాడు. ప్రారంభంలో తత్వశాస్త్రం పై మక్కువ ఉన్ననూ తర్వాత రాజకీయ అర్థశాస్త్రం వైపు మళ్ళినాడు. 1975లో టారిఫ్ నియంత్రణ ప్రభావాలను అధ్యయనం చేయడానికి అమెరికా వెళ్ళినాడు. ఆ తర్వాత ఒక సంవత్సరం ఇటలీలో గడిపినాడు. 1882లో బ్రిస్టల్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో ఆచార్యుడిగా చేరినాడు. 1883లో ఆక్స్‌ఫర్డ్ విశ్వవిద్యాలయానికి చెందిన బాలియోట్ కళాశాలలో బోధించాడు. ఆ తర్వాత 1888 ఉంచి 1908 వరకు కేంబ్రిడ్జి విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో రాజకీయ అర్థశాస్త్రం ఉపన్యాసకుడిగా పనిచేశాడు. అతని కాలంలో ఇంగ్లాండు లోని ఆర్థికవేత్తలలో అతనే ప్రసిద్ధుడు. ఉపాంత వినియోగం, సప్లై డిమాండు, ఉత్పత్తి వ్యయాలు అంశాలపై అతను గణనీయమైన పరిశోధనలు చేసాడు. అర్థశాస్త్రంలో అతని యొక్క ప్రముఖ రచనలు Priciples of Economics, Industry and Trade. ఆర్థశాస్త్రంలో అనేక పరిశోధనలు చేసి 1924లో మరణించాడు.
