Usage

Saves you filling out a citation template every time you want to cite a journal article. If your source article has a digital object identifier (DOI), just enter {{Cite doi|doi of your source}}. There is no need to subst this template (so long as it matches the format of citations already in the article).

If another Wikipedia article already uses that reference (via the Cite doi template), it will automatically use the existing information to present the full citation details of the reference in the article. If not, a bot will complete it for you if you click the "jump the queue" link (the bot does not currently autofill the template).

Use like this:

Quotes

To include a quote from the reference, just place it inside the ref tags. To include more than one quote, the name parameter must be unique for each ref tag.

If the quote should appear every time a reference is used, then add a quote parameter to the cite doi template.

Removing the "edit" link

If you want to remove the "edit" link that this template places, add a second parameter with the text "noedit":

Modifying display of authors

The number of authors displayed can be modified by adding a "displayauthors = n" parameter:

• <ref>{{Cite doi/sandbox|10.1140/epja/i2006-10091-y|displayauthors=6}}</ref>

and follow the edit link in the template and insert the following "pass through" parameter into the cite doi template:

• |displayauthors={{{displayauthors|}}}

The authors can be displayed in a Vancouver system format by adding a "van=yes" parameter:

and follow the edit link in the template and insert the following "pass through" parameters into the cite doi template:

Troubleshooting

DOIs containing certain characters are not displayed and must be substituted in-text after expansion.

• < should be replaced with .3C
• > should be replaced with .3E

Formatting

Templates produced via the Cite doi template need to be formatted consistently so they match the reference formatting of all the articles in which they are used. Therefore, they are formatted under the following guidelines. The correct formatting is maintained by Citation bot. Please do not use the Cite doi template in articles whose references are formatted differently. (You could subst: the template and change its formatting in the article, or modify the article to use this mode of formatting if appropriate).

Author formatting

Smith, A. B. (not "Smith, Arthur Brown"; initial separated by a single space)

The usual guidelines for wikilinking apply: only use |author1-link= if the link adds value to the citation.

Page number formatting

first and last page numbers written in full; for instance, R100–R101

Dates

If a month or season may help locate a journal article, specify it with the |date= parameter (e.g. |date=Sep 2009 or |date=Winter 1988). Do not specify the |day= or |month= parameters.

Links

The URL should point to (in descending order of preference):

• Free access to the full text of the article on the publisher's Web site
• Free full text on an author's Web site (if no copyright issues)
• Free full text on an advert-supported Web site
• Free proofs/drafts on an author's personal Web site (if no copyright issues)
• Avoid adding links to articles located behind a paywall. The DOI link already takes care of that.

As a further point, unnecessary whitespace in Cite doi templates should be avoided.

Technical overview

The template works by transcluding a template, which is stored as Template:cite doi/anchor_encoded_version_of_DOI. This subpage is filled out by a bot using the {{cite journal}} syntax.
