పోఖ్రాన్-II పరీక్షలు అన్నది భారతదేశం భారత సైన్యానికి చెందిన పోఖ్రాన్ పరీక్షా రేంజిలో మే 1998లో నిర్వహించిన ఐదు న్యూక్లియర్ బాంబుల విస్ఫోటనాల పరీక్షలు.[4] భారతదేశం నిర్వహించిన రెండవ అణు పరీక్షలు ఇవి; మొదట 1974 మే నెలలో స్మైలింగ్ బుద్ధ అన్న సంకేత నామంతో తొలి పరీక్ష నిర్వహించారు.[5]

200 కిలోటన్నుల శక్తిని ఉత్పత్తి చేసి బయటకు విడువగల థర్మోన్యూక్లియర్ ఆయుధాలనూ, అణువిచ్ఛిత్తినీ తయారుచేయగల సామర్థ్యాన్ని భారతదేశానికి అందించడం వీటి ప్రధాన లక్ష్యం. పరీక్షలు ఆ ప్రధాన లక్ష్యాన్ని అందుకున్నాయి.[6] అప్పటి భారత అణు శక్తి కమిషన్ రాజగోపాల చిదంబరం పోఖ్రాన్-II పేలుళ్ళలో ఒకదాన్ని "ఇతర అణ్వస్త్ర దేశాలు దశాబ్దాల పాటు చేసిన వివిధ పరీక్షలకు సమానమైనదని" అభివర్ణించాడు.[7] భారతదేశం తర్వాత, పరీక్షలో ఉపయోగించిన పేలుడు పదార్థాల డిజైన్‌ను పోలిన డిజైన్ కలిగిన ఇతర న్యూక్లియర్ పేలుళ్ళ నుంచి వచ్చే శక్తిని ముందుగానే అంచనా కట్టగల కంప్యూటర్ స్టిమ్యులేషన్ సామర్థ్యాన్ని తాను సాధించిన విషయమూ నిరూపించింది.[8]

పోఖ్రాన్-II పరీక్షల్లో ఐదు విస్ఫోటనాలు జరిగాయి, మొదటిది ఫ్యూజన్ బాంబు కాగా మిగిలినవన్నీ ఫిషన్ బాంబులు (అణువిచ్ఛిత్తి బాంబులు).[9] ఆపరేషన్ శక్తి పేరిట ఒక ప్యూజన్ బాంబు, రెండు ఫిషన్ బాంబుల విస్ఫోటనంతో పరీక్షలు 1998 మే 11న ప్రారంభమయ్యాయి.[10] 1998 మే 13న అదనంగా మరో రెండు ఫిషన్ బాంబులు కూడా విస్ఫోటనం చేశారు.[11] ఇది జరిగిన కొద్దిసేపటికి ఆనాటి భారత ప్రధానమంత్రి అటల్ బిహారీ వాజపేయి ఆధ్వర్యంలోని భారత ప్రభుత్వం ఒక పత్రికా సమావేశం నిర్వహించి భారతదేశం పూర్తి-స్థాయి అణ్వస్త్ర దేశమని ప్రకటించింది.[12] ఈ పరీక్షల కారణంగా తర్వాత జపాన్, అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలు సహా పలు ప్రధాన దేశాలు భారతదేశంపై రకరకాల ఆంక్షలు విధించాయి.

ఈ పరీక్షలకు అనేక పేర్లు పెట్టారు. మొదట ఈ పరీక్షలను ఉమ్మడిగా ఆపరేషన్ శక్తి-98 అని పిలిచారు, ఐదు న్యూక్లియర్ బాంబులకు శక్తి-I నుంచి శక్తి-V వరకూ వరుసగా పేర్లు పెట్టారు. ఇటీవలి కాలంలో, ఆపరేషన్ మొత్తాన్ని కలిపి పోఖ్రాన్-II గానూ, 1974 నాటి విస్ఫోటనాన్ని పోఖ్రాన్-I గానూ వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారు.[13] భారత ప్రభుత్వం ఈ పరీక్షల్లో మొదటిది జరిగిన మే 11 తేదీని పోఖ్రాన్ II పరీక్షల జ్ఞాపకార్థం అధికారికంగా జాతీయ సాంకేతిక విజ్ఞాన దినోత్సవంగా ప్రకటిచింది.[14] ఈరోజున ప్రతీ సంవత్సరం భారత ప్రభుత్వం శాస్త్ర సాంకేతిక రంగాల్లో కృషిచేసిన వివిధ వ్యక్తులు, పరిశ్రమలుకు పురస్కారాలు అందిస్తుంది.[14]
