రెండవ పంజాబ్ శాసనసభకు 1957లో ఎన్నికలు జరిగాయి. 121 నియోజకవర్గాల్లోని 154 స్థానాలకు (21 ద్విసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాలు, 84 ఏకసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాలు) గాను 661 మంది అభ్యర్థులు పోటీ చేశారు.
రాష్ట్ర పునర్వ్యవస్థీకరణ[మార్చు]
1956 నవంబరు 1 న, రాష్ట్రాల పునర్వ్యవస్థీకరణ చట్టం, 1956 ప్రకారం, పాటియాలా, ఈస్ట్ పంజాబ్ స్టేట్స్ యూనియన్‌ను పంజాబ్‌లో విలీనం చేసారు.[1] ఆ విధంగా 1952లో 126 స్థానాలతో ఉన్న 105 అసెంబ్లీ నియోజకవర్గాలను 1957 ఎన్నికల్లో 154 స్థానాలతో 121కి పెంచారు.
నియోజకవర్గాలు[మార్చు]
రాష్ట్ర పునర్వ్యవస్థీకరణ తర్వాత, 88 నియోజకవర్గాలు ఏకసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాలు కాగా, 33 ద్విసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాలు. 121 నియోజకవర్గాలలో 33 షెడ్యూల్డ్ తెగలకు రిజర్వు చేయబడ్డాయి. ఏకసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాల్లో 52,44,907 మంది ఓటర్లు ఉండగా, ద్విసభ్య నియోజకవర్గాల్లో 3,96,40,19 మంది ఉన్నారు. ఈ 154 స్థానాల్లో మొత్తం 661 మంది అభ్యర్థులు బరిలో నిలిచారు.
నాలుగు జాతీయ పార్టీలు, కమ్యూనిస్ట్ పార్టీ ఆఫ్ ఇండియా, కాంగ్రెస్, ప్రజా సోషలిస్ట్ పార్టీ, భారతీయ జనసంఘ్‌లతో పాటు రాష్ట్ర పార్టీ షెడ్యూల్డ్ క్యాస్ట్ ఫెడరేషన్ ఈ ఎన్నికలలో పాల్గొన్నాయి. ఎన్నికలలో కాంగ్రెస్ 47.51% ఓట్ షేర్‌తో మొత్తం సీట్లలో 77.92% (అంటే 120 సీట్లు) గెలుచుకుని స్పష్టమైన విజేతగా నిలిచింది. కాంగ్రెస్ పార్టీకి చెందిన ప్రతాప్ సింగ్ కైరోన్ మళ్లీ ముఖ్యమంత్రి అయ్యారు.
