అంగుళం అనేది ఒక దూరమానం. ఒక గజానికి 36 అంగుళాలు, ఒక అడుగుకి 12 అంగుళాలు. ఒక అంగుళానికి 2.54 సెంటీమీటర్లు. ఒక అంగుళం అనునది సాధారణంగా అమెరికా సంయుక్త రాష్ట్రాలు,[1] కెనడా ,[2][3] యునైటెడ్ కింగ్ డమ్ లో పొడవుకు ప్రమాణం గా వినియోగిస్తున్నారు. అంతర్జాతీయ ప్రమాణాల ప్రకారం అంగుళం యొక్క గుర్తు in , కానీ అంగుళం డబుల్ ప్రైమ్ (″ ) అనే గుర్తుతో సూచిస్తారు. , అడుగు నకు ప్రైమ్ (’) గుర్తుతో సూచిస్తారు. ఈ గుర్తు ఎపోస్ట్రోఫ్ గా ఆంగ్లంలో వాడబడుతుంది. ఉదాహరణకు 3 అడుగుల 2 అంగుళాలను 3 2 గా సూచిస్తాము. అంగుళంలో భాగాలను భిన్నములుగా సూచిస్తారు. ఉదాహరణకు 2 3/8 అంగుళాల ను2 ⅜గా సూచిస్తారు కాని 2.375 గా గాని, , 2 6⁄16 గా గాని సూచించరాదు.

inch అనే ఆంగ్ల పదము uncia నే లాటిన్ పదం నుండి ఉద్భవించింది. లాటిన్ భాషలో దీని అర్థము "పన్నెండవ భాగము"(అనగా ఒక అడుగు పొడవులో పన్నెండవ భాగము): ఔన్స్ అనుపదం కూడా ఇదేవిధంగా (పౌండులో పన్నెండవ భాగం) ఉధ్బవించింది.

చరిత్ర[మార్చు]

ఇంగ్లాండ్ లో మొదటగా "అంగుళము" అను నది 7 వ శతాబ్దంలో వ్రాసిన అథెల్బెర్థ్ నియమాలలో గల గుర్తు ఆధారంగా తెలిసింది.1120 తర్వాత వ్రాసిన గుర్తుల ఆధారంగా కూడా ఇంచ్ ను వాడుతున్నారు.[5] ఈ గ్రంథంలో LXVII ప్రకారం గాయముల యొక్క వివిధ లోతులను తెలుసుకొనుటకు : ఒక ఇంచ్,ఒక షిల్లింగ్, రెండు ఇంచ్ లు, రెండు షిల్లింగ్ లు మొదలగునవి వాడబడుచున్నవి[6][7] పొడవుకు అంగ్లో షష్ట్యంశ ప్రమాణం బర్లెకార్న్. 1066 తర్వాత 1 అంగుళం అనగా 3 బార్లెకార్న్ లకు సమానంగా ఉంటుంది.ఇది అనేక దేశములలో న్యాయపరమైనదిగా గుర్తించారు. బార్లెకార్న్ అనునది మూల ప్రమాణం..[8] ప్రాచీన నిర్వచనములలో 1424 లో ఇంగ్లండ్ లో ఎడ్వర్డ్ II యొక్క విగ్రహంలో తెలియజేయబడింది. అంగుళం అనునది మూడు బార్లీ గింజలు,గుండ్రంగా పొడిగా నున్నవి,వరుసగా పేర్చితే దాని పొడవుకు సమానము.[8]

ప్రస్తుతం అంతర్జాతీయంగా యు.ఎస్., ఇంపీరియల్ ప్రమాణాల ప్రకారం ఒక అంగుళం విలువ 25.4 మిల్లీ మీటర్లు. దీని ఆధారంగా అంతర్జాతీయ గజం(యార్డ్) కచ్చితంగా 0.9144 మీటర్లు ఉంటుంది.ఈ విలువలు అంతర్జాతీయ యార్డ్, పొండ్ అగ్రీమెంట్ నుండి 1959 నుండి దత్తత తీసుకోబడ్డాయి..[10] ఈ నిర్వచనం దత్తత తీసుకొనుటకు పూర్వం వివిధ నిర్వచనములు వాడుకలో ఉండెడివి. యునైటెడ్ కింగ్ డం, అనేక కామన్వెల్త్ దేశాలలో అంగుళం నకు ఇంపీరియల్ ప్రమాణాల యార్డు లలో తెలిపేవారు. యు.ఎస్ లో 1893 చట్టం ప్రకారం అంగుళం అనగా 25.4 మిల్లీ మీటర్లు. 1893 లో శుద్ధి చేసిన నిర్వచనం ప్రకారం ఒక మీటరులో ⅟39.37 వంతుగా తీసుకున్నారు.[11] 1930 లో బ్రిటిష్ ప్రమాణాల సంస్థ అంగుళం అనగా 25.4 మిల్లీ మీటర్లుగా తీసుకున్నది. అమెరికన్ ప్రమాణాల సంస్థ కూడా 1933 లో దీనిని అనుకరించడం జరిగింది. 1935 లో 16 దేశములు "ఇండస్ట్రియల్ అంగుళాన్ని" దత్తత తీసుకోవటం జరిగింది.[12][13]

1946 లో కామన్వెల్త్ సైన్స్ కాంగ్రెస్ కూడా ఒక యార్డు అనగా 0.9144 మీటర్లుగా తీసుకొనుటకు బ్రిటిష్ కామన్వెల్త్ కు సిఫారసు చేసింది. ఈ విలువను కెనడా 1951 లో దత్తత తీసుకున్నది.[14] యునైటెడ్ స్టేట్స్, యునైటెడ్ కింగ్ డం, కెనడా, ఆస్ట్రేలియా, న్యూజీలండ్, దక్షిణ ఆఫ్రికా దేశాలు 1959 జూలై 1 నుండి ఈ ప్రమాణాన్ని ఉపయోగించాలని ఒడంబడిక కుదుర్చుకున్నాయి.[15] ఈ విధంగా అంగుళం అనగా 25.4 mm.గా నిర్ణయించబడింది.
