జల కన్యలు
జల కన్య లేక మత్స్య కన్య ప్రపంచంలోని అనేక సంస్కృతులకు చెందిన పురాణాల్లో వర్ణించబడిన జీవులు. అనగా నీటిలో నివసించే ఒక రకమైన జీవులు. ఇవి సగం మానవ రూపాన్ని సగం మత్స్య రూపాన్ని కలిగి ఉంటాయి, అనగా తలనుండి నడుము వరకు మనిషి రూపాన్ని నడుము నుండి చేప వలె తోక ఉంటుంది. వీటిలో జాతి విభేదము కూడా ఉంటుంది. సాధారణంగా ఇటువంటి జలచరాలను స్త్రీరూపంలోనే చిత్రిస్తారు. 2004 లో వచ్చిన సునామీలో అట్టడు సముద్ర గర్భంలోదాగి ఉన్న చేపలలో కొన్ని వాటికి మత్స్య కన్యల వలెనే రూపం ఉన్నట్లు ఒక అధ్యయనంలో తేలింది.[ఆధారం చూపాలి] [1] ఇటువంటి జీవులు సముద్ర గర్భంలో మాత్రమే తిరుగాడుతూ ఉంటాయని ఊహ. వాస్తవానికి జలకన్యలు పురాణ సంబంధమైన జీవులు మాత్రమే. సాహస వీరుడు-సాగరకన్య అను తెలుగు సినిమాలో శిల్పా కుంద్రా జలకన్యగా నటించింది.
కంబోడియా, థాయిలాండ్ రామాయణాల్లో సువన్నమచ్చ (బంగారు మత్స్య కన్య) అనే రావణుని కూతురు పాత్ర కనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ మత్స్య రాకుమారి హనుమంతుడు లంకకు వారధి కట్టకుండా ఆపేందుకు విఫలయత్నం చేస్తుంది కానీ చివరికి హనుమంతుని ప్రేమలో పడుతుంది. థాయ్ జానపదంలో ఈ పాత్ర చాలా ప్రాచుర్యం పొందింది.[2]

1493లో అమెరికా ఖండపు తీరంలో సముద్రంపై ప్రయాణిస్తుండగా, క్రిస్టఫర్ కొలంబస్ సముద్రం నుండి మూడు స్త్రీరూపం కలిగిన జీవులు సముద్రం నుండి పైకి ఎగసిపడ్డాయని, కాకపోతే అవి అందరూ వర్ణించినంత అందంగా ఏమీలేవని నివేదించారు.[3][4]
