పీత (ఆంగ్లం Crab) పది కాళ్ళ క్రస్టేషియా (Crustacea) జీవులు. ఇవి బ్రాకీయూరా (Brachyura) నిమ్నక్రమానికి చెందినవి. వీటికి చిన్న తోక (మూస:Lang-el = short, ουρά/οura = tail) కుంచించుకుపోయిన ఉదరము ఉరోభాగం చేత కప్పబడుతుంది. ఇవి మందమైన బాహ్య అస్తిపంజరం (exoskeleton) చేత కప్పబడి రెండు కీలే అనే భాగాలుంటాయి. వీనిలో 6,793 జాతులు గుర్తించబడ్డాయి.[1] పీతలు ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా ప్రధానంగా సముద్రజలాల్లో నివసిస్తాయి. కొన్ని రకాలు మంచినీటిలోను మరియు భూమి మీద కూడా నివసిస్తాయి. ఇవి పరిమాణంలో కొన్ని మిల్లీమీటర్ల నుండి 4 మీటర్ల వరకు ఉంటాయి.[2]
