Traditionally five subfamilies are distinguished, the Felinae, the Pantherinae, the Acinonychinae (Cheetahs) and the extinct Machairodontinae and Proailurinae.[2] However the Acinonychinae are probably invalid, as genetic evidence suggests that cheetahs and cougars are close relatives.
