1901లో తొలిసారిగా స్థాపించబడిన నోబెల్ బహుమతిని 2018 సంవత్సరంలో మొత్తం 904 మంది వ్యక్తులుకు, (వారిలో 852 మంది పురుషులు, 52 మంది మహిళలు) 24 సంస్థలకు అందించారు.[1] గ్రహీతలలో 11 మంది భారతీయులు ( వారిలో నలుగురు భారతీయ పౌరులు, ఏడుగురు భారతీయ పూర్వీకులు లేదా వారి నివాసులు). రవీంద్రనాథ్ ఠాగూర్ ఈ పురస్కారం పొందిన మొదటి భారతీయ పౌరుడు. 1913లో పురస్కారం పొందిన మొదటి ఆసియా వ్యక్తి. గ్రహీతల జాబితాలో మదర్ థెరిసా మాత్రమే మహిళ. [2] అరబిందో, భారతీయ కవి, తత్వవేత్త, జాతీయవాది, సమగ్ర యోగా అభివృద్ధి కర్త, 1943లో సాహిత్యంలో నోబెల్ బహుమతికి, 1950లో నోబెల్ శాంతి బహుమతికి విఫలమయ్యారు [3] [4]

1999 డిసెంబరు 1 న, నార్వేజియన్ నోబెల్ కమిటీ మహాత్మా గాంధీని శాంతి బహుమతికి ఐదుసార్లు (1937 నుండి 1939 వరకు, 1947 జనవరిలో, 1948లో హత్య చేయడానికి కొన్ని రోజుల ముందు) విఫలమయ్యారని ధృవీకరించింది.[5] 2006లో నార్వేజియన్ నోబెల్ కమిటీ కార్యదర్శి గీర్ లుండెస్టాడ్ దానిని "మన 106-సంవత్సరాల చరిత్రలోఅతిపెద్ద లోపం" గా పేర్కొన్నాడు. నోబెల్ గ్రహీతలలో ఇద్దరు (ఠాగూర్, సివి రామన్) వారికి ప్రదానం చేయబడిన సమయంలో బ్రిటిష్ ఇండియా పౌరులు కాగా, ఇద్దరు విదేశీ మూలానికి చెందినవారు (రాస్, కిప్లింగ్). గ్రహీతలలో ముగ్గురు రిపబ్లిక్ ఆఫ్ ఇండియా (మదర్ థెరిసా, సేన్, సత్యార్థి) పౌరులు, నలుగురు పుట్టుకతో భారతీయులు (ఖోరానా, చంద్రశేఖర్, రామకృష్ణన్, బెనర్జీ) కానీ తరువాత వారు భారత పౌరులు కానివారుగా అయ్యారు.
