బ్రహ్మ మల్లిక అనునది ఎత్తుగా, లావుగా పెరిగె ఒక వృక్షం పేరు. ఆఫ్రికా ఖండంలో పెరిగే ఈ చెట్టు శాస్త్రీయ నామం : Adansonia digitata. దీనిని ఆంగ్లంలో baobab, dead-rat tree (from the appearance of the fruits), monkey-bread tree (the soft, dry fruit is edible), upside-down tree (the sparse branches resemble roots) and cream of tartar tree అని పిలుస్తారు.

ఇవి చాలా పెద్ద వృక్షాలుగా పెరిగా సామాన్యంగా ఒంటరిగా కనిపిస్తాయి. చూచినవెంటనే గుర్తించేవిధంగా అనగా తిరగబడిన వృక్షం మాదిరిగా ఉంటాయి. ఇవి వేయి కన్నా ఎక్కువ సంవత్సరాలు జీవిస్తాయి.[1] దీని పుష్పాలు తెల్లని తెలుపు రంగులో పెద్దవిగా ఉండి వ్రేలాడుతుంటాయి. ఇవి మంచి సువాసన కలిగివుండి గబ్బిలాలు ద్వారా పరాగసంపర్గం జరుపుకుంటాయి. దీని పండ్లు తెల్లని గుజురు కలిగి ఎండి గట్టిపడి క్రిందపడి రొట్టె ముక్కలుగా కనిపిస్తాయి.[2] ఇది ఆఫ్రికాలో సాంప్రదాయపు ఆహార ప్రధానమైన మొక్క.[3]
దీని జాతి నామం digitata వీని ఆకుల ఆకారం ఆధారంగా వచ్చినది. ప్రతి దానిలో ఐదు ఆకులు కలిసి చేతివేళ్లలాగా కనిపిస్తాయి.
