ఏథెన్స్ (ఆంగ్లం : Athens) (ఎథీనా), గ్రీసు (పాత పేరు గ్రీకు) దేశపు రాజధాని, పెద్ద నగరం. దీని చరిత్ర దాదాపు 3,400 సంవత్సరాల పురాతనమైనది. ప్రపంచంలోని అతి పురాతనమైన నగరాలలో ఒకటి. గ్రీకు దేవత ఎథీనా పేరుమీద ఈ నగరం ఏర్పడింది.

దీని జనాభా 2001 గణాంకాల ప్రకారం 745,514 (పరిపాలనా విభాగ ప్రాంతం),[1] 39 చ.కి.మీ. విస్తీర్ణం కలిగివున్నది.[2] దీని అర్బన్ ప్రాంతం విస్తీర్ణం పరిపాలనా విభాగం కంటే చాలా ఎక్కువ ఉండి, జనాభా 3,130,841 (2001) ఉంది,[1] విస్తీర్ణం 412 చ.కి.మీ.[2] యూరోపియన్ యూనియన్ లోని అధిక జనాభా గల నగరాలలో ఏడవ స్థానంలో ఉంది.[3] ఈ నగరం ఒక కాస్మోపాలిటన్ నగరం, ఆర్థిక, పారిశ్రామిక, రాజకీయ, సాంస్కృతిక కేంద్రం. వేగంగా అభివృద్ధి చెందుతూ యూరోపియన్ యూనియన్ లోనే ప్రముఖ వాణిజ్య కేంద్రంగా మారే దిశకు పయనిస్తూంది. 2008 ప్రపంచంలో కోనుగోలు శక్తి గల దేశాల జాబితాలో 32వ స్థానంలో ఉంది.[4] ఖరీదైన నగరాల జాబితాలో 25వ స్థానంలో ఉంది.[5]

క్లాసికల్ ఏథెన్స్ ఒక శక్తిమంతమైన నగర రాజ్యం. విజ్ఞాన, కళా, తత్వ రంగాల కేంద్రం, ప్లాటో పుట్టినిల్లు, ప్లాటోనిక్ అకాడమీ గల నగరం, అరిస్టాటిల్ యొక్క లైసియం గల నగరం.[6][7] ఏథెన్స్ నగరం సోక్రటీసు, పెరిక్లస్, సోఫోక్లిస్, ప్రపంచ ప్రసిద్ధిగాంచిన ఎందరో తత్వవేత్తల పుట్టినిల్లు. దీనికి నాగరికతలుయ్యాల అనే ఘనమైన పేరునూ, ప్రజాస్వామ్యం పుట్టిన ప్రదేశంగానూ పేరు గలదు.[8][9]
